Public holidays in Spain 2026: the working calendar for every region

All 2026 public holidays in Spain and its 17 regions, from the BOE and regional gazettes: Sunday holidays, and what working a holiday pays.

Spain has no single holiday calendar. The state sets a framework and each of the 17 autonomous communities slots in its own days. The ceiling is in Article 37.2 of the Estatuto de los Trabajadores: no more than fourteen public holidays a year, paid and not to be made up, two of them local. The official list for 2026 was published by the Dirección General de Trabajo in its resolution of 17 October 2025 (BOE, 28 October 2025); the regions had already fixed their own days by decree in their gazettes.

In 2026 that means twelve state and regional holidays in each region, plus two local holidays chosen by each municipality. Eight days are the same everywhere; the other four vary from region to region.

The eight holidays shared across Spain in 2026

  • 1 January (Thursday): New Year's Day
  • 6 January (Tuesday): Epiphany
  • 3 April: Good Friday
  • 1 May (Friday): Labour Day
  • 15 August (Saturday): Assumption
  • 12 October (Monday): National Day of Spain
  • 8 December (Tuesday): Immaculate Conception
  • 25 December (Friday): Christmas Day

Seven of these cannot be replaced by any region. A region could swap 6 January for a holiday of its own, but in 2026 all seventeen have kept it.

When a holiday falls on a Sunday

Two national holidays fall on a Sunday in 2026: All Saints' Day (1 November) and Constitution Day (6 December). Under Article 37.2 the day off then moves to the following Monday. The same article, however, lets the regions use that Monday for a traditional holiday of their own instead. That is why 2 November and 7 December 2026 are days off in some regions and ordinary working days in others.

  • Madrid, Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Castile and León and Extremadura take both Mondays off: 2 November and 7 December.
  • The Balearic Islands swap the All Saints' Monday for 26 December, Cantabria for La Bien Aparecida (15 September), and the Region of Murcia for its regional day on 9 June.
  • Castile-La Mancha swaps the Constitution Monday for Corpus Christi (4 June).
  • Galicia uses both Mondays for St Joseph's Day and St John's Day; the Basque Country for St Joseph's Day and St James's Day (25 July).

Regional holidays 2026, region by region

Each region adds these four days to the eight shared ones. The weekday is given where it matters for planning.

  • Andalusia: 28 February, Día de Andalucía (Saturday); 2 April, Maundy Thursday; 2 November; 7 December.
  • Aragon: 2 April, Maundy Thursday; 23 April, St George's Day, Día de Aragón; 2 November; 7 December.
  • Asturias: 2 April, Maundy Thursday; 8 September, Día de Asturias; 2 November; 7 December.
  • Balearic Islands: 2 March, the Monday after Balearic Islands Day; 2 April, Maundy Thursday; 6 April, Easter Monday; 26 December (Saturday).
  • Canary Islands: 2 April, Maundy Thursday; 30 May, Canary Islands Day (Saturday); 2 November; plus each island's own holiday.
  • Cantabria: 2 April, Maundy Thursday; 28 July, Día de las Instituciones; 15 September, La Bien Aparecida; 7 December.
  • Castile-La Mancha: 2 April, Maundy Thursday; 6 April, Easter Monday; 4 June, Corpus Christi; 2 November.
  • Castile and León: 2 April, Maundy Thursday; 23 April, the region's day; 2 November; 7 December.
  • Catalonia: 6 April, Easter Monday; 24 June, Sant Joan; 11 September, National Day of Catalonia; 26 December, Sant Esteve (Saturday). In the Val d'Aran, 17 June replaces 26 December.
  • Valencian Community: 19 March, St Joseph's Day; 6 April, Easter Monday; 24 June, St John's Day; 9 October, Valencian Community Day.
  • Extremadura: 2 April, Maundy Thursday; 8 September, Día de Extremadura; 2 November; 7 December.
  • Galicia: 19 March, St Joseph's Day; 2 April, Maundy Thursday; 24 June, St John's Day; 25 July, Galicia's National Day (Saturday).
  • Community of Madrid: 2 April, Maundy Thursday; 2 May, Madrid Region Day (Saturday); 2 November; 7 December.
  • Region of Murcia: 19 March, St Joseph's Day; 2 April, Maundy Thursday; 9 June, Murcia Region Day; 7 December.
  • Navarre: 19 March, St Joseph's Day; 2 April, Maundy Thursday; 6 April, Easter Monday; 2 November; 3 December, St Francis Xavier.
  • Basque Country: 19 March, St Joseph's Day; 2 April, Maundy Thursday; 6 April, Easter Monday; 25 July, St James's Day (Saturday).
  • La Rioja: 2 April, Maundy Thursday; 6 April, Easter Monday; 9 June, Día de La Rioja; 7 December.

In the Canary Islands each island adds its own day: Tenerife 2 February (Candelaria), La Palma 5 August (Virgen de las Nieves), Gran Canaria 8 September (Virgen del Pino), Lanzarote and La Graciosa 15 September (Virgen de los Volcanes), Fuerteventura 18 September (Virgen de la Peña), El Hierro 24 September (Virgen de los Reyes) and La Gomera 5 October (Virgen de Guadalupe). The BOE list also covers the cities of Ceuta and Melilla, where Eid al-Adha (27 May) is among the 2026 holidays.

Local holidays: two per municipality

On top of that, each municipality has up to two local holidays a year, also paid and not to be made up. The town council proposes them, the region's labour authority sets them, and they are published in the regional gazette (Article 46 of Real Decreto 2001/1983). Because they differ from town to town, they are not listed here. Look them up in your region's list of fiestas locales — for the Balearic Islands, for example, in the BOIB of 27 September 2025, alongside the regional days.

Holidays on a Saturday

The Monday rule only covers Sundays. In 2026, 15 August falls on a Saturday everywhere, and so, depending on the region, do Día de Andalucía, Madrid Region Day, Canary Islands Day, 25 July in Galicia and the Basque Country, and 26 December in the Balearics and Catalonia. The law does not move it. Whether you get anything in return if you work Monday to Friday depends on your collective agreement or a company agreement — ask if in doubt. If you work Saturdays, that day is a holiday for you.

Working on a public holiday: what you are owed

Public holidays are paid: your wage continues and nothing has to be made up later. If, for technical or organisational reasons, your employer needs you to work that day, Article 47 of Real Decreto 2001/1983 requires those hours to be paid with a premium of at least 75 % — unless you are given equivalent time off instead. In hospitality and retail, working holidays is routine, and many collective agreements spell out the premium or day off you are due. Check your convenio and keep a note of the holidays you work; the working-time record (registro de jornada) is your evidence.

How many public holidays does Spain have in 2026?

At most fourteen in any municipality: twelve state and regional holidays plus two local ones. Eight of the twelve apply everywhere; the region sets the other four. Navarre has thirteen regional holidays and a single local one.

Is 2 November 2026 a holiday?

It depends on the region. It is a day off in Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, the Canary Islands, both Castiles, Extremadura, Madrid and Navarre. Catalonia, the Valencian Community, the Balearics, Cantabria, Galicia, Murcia, the Basque Country and La Rioja work as normal.

Is Maundy Thursday a holiday everywhere?

In fifteen regions, yes. Catalonia and the Valencian Community take Easter Monday (6 April) off instead.

What am I paid if I work on a public holiday?

Under Article 47 of Real Decreto 2001/1983, the hours worked with a premium of at least 75 % — or a compensatory day off instead. Your collective agreement may give you more.

Does a Saturday holiday move to Monday?

No. The law only moves holidays that fall on a Sunday. Whether you get anything for a Saturday holiday depends on your collective agreement or a company agreement.
