Working in Mallorca: seasonal or year-round

Mallorca's labour market has two faces. From April to October, hotels, restaurants and beach bars need staff at short notice — the classic seasonal roles, often with accommodation and a quick decision. Alongside that runs the year-round market: care, skilled trades, cleaning, administration and real estate continue through winter and hire most urgently then, because fewer applicants are on the island. Searching in autumn usually means less competition for year-round roles than in spring.

Which industries carry the island

Before the contract: two numbers

Without an NIE and a Spanish social security number no company can register you. These are two separate procedures at two different authorities, and they get mixed up regularly — including the question of who obtains what: you get the numbers, the employer files the employment registration. You need neither to apply. Even so, anyone who knows they are coming is better off sorting it beforehand: it can save weeks between the offer and the first day.

When the contract ends in October

Seasonal work on Mallorca usually runs on a fijo discontinuo contract. Almost everyone takes it for a fixed-term contract and it is the opposite: a permanent contract that lies dormant between seasons. Rights follow from that which people only claim when they know about them — being called back for the next season, and seniority counting the whole duration of the contract rather than only the months worked. Anyone who thinks in October that the contract has ended negotiates from the wrong position in spring.

Do I need Spanish for a job in Mallorca?

Not everywhere. In the German-speaking tourism sector — hotels, restaurants, real estate and customer service for German guests — German is often enough, sometimes with English. For paperwork, contracts and daily life outside the tourist areas, Spanish still helps a great deal.

What do I need to work legally in Mallorca?

For EU citizens, mainly two things: the NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) as your tax and identification number, and a Spanish social security number. Both are applied for locally; the NIE usually needs an appointment at the immigration office. Many employers help with registration — listings on Vokaro say so when it is offered. Without these numbers no employment contract can be registered.

Are there jobs with accommodation in Mallorca?

Yes, especially in season. Hotels and beach restaurants often provide a room or flat, because affordable housing is scarce on the island in summer.
