Registering on the padrón in Mallorca

Empadronamiento is registration on the municipal register of inhabitants, the padrón municipal de habitantes. It is not a residence permit and not a tax filing: it records where you live. That is precisely why so much depends on it.

How it works in Palma

1. 01Book at citaprevia.palma.cat under Padrón (registrations and address changes), choosing one of the citizen service offices.
2. 02Attend with your identity document and proof of address.
3. 03Registration is recorded on the spot; the certificate or volante follows, and can also be obtained online.

People over 65 are seen without an appointment at the Son Moix office in the morning. Justified urgent cases are also seen without one — a school enrolment deadline, or urgent access to healthcare.

Documents

• Identity document: passport, national ID card, NIE or DNI.
• Proof of address. Renting: a lease of at least six months; if more than three months have passed since signing, also a payment receipt from the current or previous month.
• Owning: title deed or Land Registry extract, the latest property tax (IBI) receipt, and a recent electricity, water or gas bill.
• For children: birth certificate or family book, and the consent of both parents.

When the lease is not in your name

This is the usual situation in seasonal work: a room in a shared flat, staff accommodation, a sublet. You can still register. You need a signed authorisation from the owner or main tenant, together with a copy of their identity document.

Outside Palma

Every municipality keeps its own register. The procedure and documents are similar, but appointments and online options differ considerably — smaller town halls are often quicker and frequently take walk-ins. Always register in the municipality where you actually live, not where you work.
