Getting an NIE: the first step before any contract

The NIE is a number, not a permission. It identifies you to Spanish authorities, banks and employers — that is all it does. This is the confusion that costs people the most time: anyone who thinks the NIE settles their residence status is in for a surprise later. For a job search it is still the first step, because without it no company can register you.

Who needs one

The Policía Nacional puts it broadly: foreigners connected to Spain through economic, professional or social interests. In practice that means anyone who wants to sign an employment contract, open a bank account, register a car or rent a flat. A contract without an NIE is not possible, because registration with the social security system hangs on that number.

What you need

• Form EX-15 (“Solicitud de Número de Identidad de Extranjero (NIE) y Certificados”), completed.
• Proof of payment for the fee: tax model 790, code 012.
• Your passport or ID card — original and a copy.

Where to apply

In Spain, at an Immigration Office (Oficina de Extranjería) or a police station. From abroad, through a Spanish consular office — the application then goes through the Comisaría General de Extranjería y Fronteras. On Mallorca the responsible office is in Palma; which office currently handles it and how to reach it is best checked in the Policía Nacional's office finder, because addresses and contact details do change.

How long it takes

For the decision itself, the Policía Nacional states a maximum of five days from the application being registered. The second half of that rule matters: if no answer arrives within that period, the application counts as refused. Silence is not tacit approval here — if you hear nothing, chase it rather than wait.

The three most common mistakes

1. 01The name and passport number do not match character for character across the form, the fee receipt and the passport. Middle names and hyphens are the usual stumbling block.
2. 02Paying the fee on the day of the appointment. The receipt is part of the paperwork — without it the application is incomplete.
3. 03Confusing the NIE with registering your residence. These are two separate procedures with two separate forms.

What this means for your application

You do not need an NIE to apply. You need it before the contract is signed. If you do not have one yet, say so in the interview — on Mallorca this is an everyday situation, and some employers help with the process.
